Hepworth Band & Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra join forces for a Yorkshire first!

Hepworth Band is excited to be part of Yorkshire's first public performance of Gavin Higgins's Concerto Grosso for Brass Band and Orchestra as we join forces with Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra, Saturday 18 April, in the wonderful setting of Huddersfield Town Hall.

Premièred by Tredegar Band and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales as part of the 2022 Proms, the piece drew widespread critical acclaim, being described as a "visionary work that unites two great national traditions, unleashing extraordinary lyricism and energy".

Gavin Higgins adds context to the work, explaining "Having grown up in an ex-mining community - beginning my musical training in the local brass bands in which my whole family continue to play - this music is close to my heart.

Concerto Grosso for Brass Band and Orchestra is a love letter to that music and those communities. Drawing on banding’s cultural legacy and musical style it is a celebratory work that puts the brass band front and centre. Concerto Grosso for Brass Band and Orchestra is a five movement piece in two parts. Part one looks at the mediums geographical, industrial, and socio-economic roots; whilst Part two explores musical aspects synonymous with the music: high lyricism and dazzling virtuosity." ( Gavin Higgins - Composer)

The Concerto Grosso forms the centrepiece of the programme, alongside two works by Richard Strauss, Fest Music der Stadt Wien and Ein Heldenleben. We can't wait to be part of what promises to be an epic evening of live music.
