Marching on through Summer
An (almost) clean sweep at the Brighouse March & Hymn Tune Contest brings another highly successful march contest season to a close.
Alongside the overall title, the band also picked up awards for the best road march, best bass section, best trombone section, best soprano cornet and the best soloist of the day.
A big thank you to Huddersfield Lions Club Charity for all their hard work organising another fantastic day of music, with a brilliant turnout of bands and supporters.
Whit Friday 2026
Our 2026 season of march contests opened with the famous Saddleworth Whit Friday Band Contests, where we enjoyed an amazing evening of great weather and a brilliant atmosphere on the circuit.
This year's event was incredibly busy, with it being widely reported that there were around 160 bands in attendance! Despite the logistical challenges that this brought, we managed to perform at six villages, being awarded first place at Diggle, Grotton and Uppermill, third place at Lydgate and Scouthead, with individual prizes for the best solo cornet at Diggle, best trombones at Lydgate and best soloist at Scouthead, earning the band a well deserved third place overall.
As ever, we're really grateful to all of the event organisers for their hard work both before and during the event to make sure things ran as smoothly as possible for everyone - Thank You!
Travellers Rest, Meltham & Morley Success
Our summer of contesting continued with another great day out at the Travellers Rest March Contest, winning both the overall contest and the hymn tune prize. We’re especially pleased that our performance of Be Thou My Vision, arranged by our MD Ryan Watkins, was awarded Best Hymn.
Congratulations to our euphonium player Daniel Chan who picked up the award for best euphonium, while guest soprano cornet player Phil Tait was awarded best soprano cornet.
Despite the changeable weather, we had a great day and were pleased to once again be able to support such a fantastic event.
We were also delighted to successfully defend our title at the Morley March & Hymn Tune Contest, winning the best contest march and being crowned overall champions.
Huge congratulations to all the players, and thank you to all the organisers, volunteers, and supporters who’ve made this year’s march contest season such a success.
